CITR Ch.21-26 Response
I really dislike the ending of this book it just kind of stops and leaves you hanging. I think that in the last chapter you can see that holden is trying to get things resolved and making some progress but he is still not better. I wonder if he will be completely cured from his sickness. I thinbk that he finally started to realize the way he was to other people which is good.
CITR Ch.26
Holoden tells us that he went home and to the hospital to the psych ward. he says that he is trying to get himself better. But he still shows signs of not being better when he is saying don't tell don't tell. he says that he can't miss anyone anymore cause he has already missed everyone that he can.

CITR Ch.22
So holden gets back and starts to tell his sister why he got kicked out of Pency. he says that he failed all of his classes except for english. He aslo starts talking about his intense hate for phony people and he says that he likes allie though because he is not like that. Then pheobe says that allie is dead and you cant like a dead person like that. Then he explains that he wants to be the "Catcher in the rye." and save kids's innocence.

She keeps saying that so holden gets mad and decides to go and get more smokes.
CITR Ch.16-20 Respone
I think that it becomes even more clear that he struggles with being lonely because he calls a bunch of people and tries to have meetings with them. It also comes out about him misseng alli's funeral. I think that this really hurts him because he has had no closuer to his death. Also he really like Jane but is like scared of her. He really needs a good friend but he is so critical of everyone else that i don't think he really can.

Her friend says that she is on a school trip to a museum. so he decides to go to the museum and so he walks there but when he gets there he starts thinking about old times and gets depressed so he doesn't go in and leaves.
CITR Ch.11-15 Response
In these chapters you can really tell that Holden struggles with being lonely. The only reason he wanted the hooker is so that he would have some company. Also the date with sally that he sets up is basically just so that he can be with someone. I think that it is kind of his own fault though because he is so critical of other people. I think that he also struggles alot with Allis death. He can't get over it and even talks about how it affects his family. He is just looking for something to not make himself feel so bad i think that is why he is so harsh on other people.
CITR Ch.15
Holden leaves the hotel and calls sally and arranges a date. He goes and stashes his stuff in a locker. While he does he talks about his parents. He says that his father hates it when he loses things. also he talks about how his mother has not been doing well since his brother has died. He is also nervious about how she will take the news about him getting kicked out of another school. He hopes that it won't affect her health harshly. then he meets two nuns and thinks a lot about religion and what they do. HE starts feeling guilty and gives them ten dollars. jThen he feels bad later and wishes he would have given them more.
CITR Ch.14
Holden is in bed theinking about alli and jane and all sorts of things. Then suddenly he hears a knock on the door. He goes and answers it and it is the elavator operator. He says that he needs the extra 5 dollars that holden didn't give the hooker but holden still refuses to pay. So then the operator beats him up snd then leaves. But not until they steal the money out of his wallet and then Holden hobbles back to bed and goes to sleep.
CITR Ch.13
Holden leaves the club and instead of getting a cab he decides to just walk all the way back to his hotel. when he gets back to the hotel the elavator guy asks him if he wants a hooker for 5 dollars. He thinks that he could use some company and says why not. So the hooker comes and Holden feels very uncomfortable and then she takes off her dress and that makes him even more uncomfortable. so then he tells her to leave and gives her the 5 bucks but then she tells him it is ten and refuses to pay and then finally gets her to leave.
CITR Ch.12
Holden goes to a club called ernie's. He goes there to see Ernie play the piano.and he does but he is not impressed. Then while he is there he sees a girl that his brother D.B. used to date. So he talks to her for a while but then he gets all flustered wioth the people in the club and very annoyed with the girl and he leaves.
CITR Ch.11
Holden explains more about his relationship with Jane. He says how he loved to hold hands with her because she was the type of girl that didn't care if your hands were sweaty or not.he says that they never did anything sexual exept kiss once. He also says that she is the only other person to ever see alli's glove which shows that he has a lot of trust in her and really thinks the world of her.

CITR CH.6-10 Response
In these chapters i think that we learn again that Holden really never has anything good to say about anyone. All he does is points out everyones flaws. If someoene has any bad character qualities he is sure to point them out. Also he takes everything that people say very personally. When Stradlater rips up the composition Holden really takes it like a personal attack especially sine it is dealing with his deceased brother. Also he really likes women. You can tell that he feels very attracted to them but even them don't escape the strict scrutiny he spews forth.
CITR Ch.10
When this chapter starts he is in his hotel room he wants to call his sister to talk but he doesn't want his parents to answer the phone. We find out that his brother D.B. is a writer. He dances with some girls but they are all a lot older than him. Basically everyone in the club thing is older than him but he just tries to look older than he is so he will fit in. He finds these three girls that he hangs out with most of the night. he really has nothing good to say about anyone which fits his character about not saying anything good about anyone.

He keeps thinking about how he can't imagine Jane fooling around with Stradlater and it really bothers him because he still likes her a lot. So then he eventually packs up his stuff and decides to leave Pency that nigh instead of waiting for wednesday.
CITR Ch. 6
In this chapter Stradlater comes home after his date and holden wants to know all that happened because he obviously has lots of feelings for Jane still and Stradlater says nothing but then finally he says that they fooled around or something. Then Stradlater reads the composition and says that it sucks and that no wonder he is failing all of his classes because he sucks at it. And that his brothers glove is a dumb subject. so holden gets angry and rips up the composition and then he starts a fight with Stradlater and Strad ends up beating him pretty good. So then after he takes the beating he goes over to ackleys room and he is all bloody and everything.
CITR Ch. 1-5 Response
In the first 5 chapters we learn that Holden is very set apart from other people and that also he points out basically everyone elses flaws. He also has this red hat that basically represents him being depressed. When he is the most depressed he puts that hat on and just thinks about his brother because the hat is red and so was his brothers hair. he feels very guilty about his brothers death. he wishes that he wouldve used the time better that he had with him.
CITR Ch.5

Strad asks him if he will write a paper for him and he says that he doesn't know if he will have time. Then he finds out that the person that strad is going on a date with is a girl that holden knows and that he really likes. Holden gets almost upset because he taking her on a date and says that strad needs to give her his regards. The thought of stradlater fooling around with Jane really upsets him.
CITR Ch.3
In the beggining of this chapter holden tells how good of a liar he is and that he lies about everything just to lie sometmes. he said that it doesn't matter how simple of a thing it is he will lie about it. Even if he is walking to the store and someone asks him where he is going then he will tell them that he is going somewhere else then we go back to his room and meet Robert Ackley, He doesn't have much good to say about him like he has nothing good to say about anyone. Him and Ack talk for a bit and Holden is just trying to get him to leave but he stays around to annoy Holden then at the end of the chapter holden's roommate stradlater. Ack hates stadlater and will =do anything to mess his stuff up.
CITR Ch.2
This whole chapter is spent talking to Mr. Spencer. he asks him how many of his classes he is failing and why. He also i think feels bad about flunking Holden but Holden says that he doesn't care and tells him not to worry about it he knew it was coming. Then he shows Holden his test and yells at him for how terrible it is. Then they talk for awhile about what he should do and where he is going to go to school now. GG Paper
In the book the The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby tries to live the American Dream. But his view of what the American Dream is, changes when he meets Daisy. The reason is because she is all he wants and will do anything to get her. When he is young he just wants to get rich, then when he meets Daisy he only wants to have things to try and win her, but in the end he loses it all. His dream changes from wanting to be successful to only wanting Daisy and he loses both in the end.
Even when Jay was young, as revealed at the end of the book by his father, has always wanted to be successful. In the book that his father found, he outlined a strict schedule of what his day needed to consist of. “”Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something.”” (Fitzgerald182) In the schedule that he wrote when he was very young he was all about bettering himself and making himself better. He wanted to not do bad things like smoking or chewing, but wanted to do good things like reading.
Then once he gets older and meets Daisy he realizes that she is the only thing that he wants. His love for money takes a back seat while he pursues Daisy. His idea of the American dream changes from only wanting to be successful in monetary ways to only wanting Daisy to fulfill his dream. But then when Daisy marries someone else he is crushed and just wants to get very rich any way that he can because he thinks that the only way that he can get her is being rich. After they meet up for the second time they go over to Gatsby’s house so that he can show her all of his nice things like his shirts to try and impress her and I think it works. "It makes me sad because I've never seen such--such beautiful shirts before." (Fitzgerald 98)
Then finally he loses everything. He tries so hard to get two things to complete his dream, Daisy and money. But in the end he ends up with neither. He gets rich off of illegal bonds and they get destroyed after his death. The other thing that he wants, Daisy ends up screwing him because he spends his whole life trying to please her and she just leaves him and doesn’t care about anything that he has done for her. "He had come a long way to this blue lawn and his dram must have seemed so close he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in the vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night."(Fitzgerald189)
The moral of the story is to have more than one thing that you strive for in your life because if you focus your whole life on one thing then you will end up hurt because if that one thing changes or dissapoints you then it really affects you. Gatsby's obsession with Daisy leaves him with nothing in the end. He doesnt' care about anything but Daisy and that is not healthy. He doesn't have any friends or other people that he can go to. And when he has his funeral there is only like 3 people there.

GG Ch.9
nick says that he is writng two year after gatsbys death and that he tried to hold a funeral for him but the only people that showed up were reporters that wanted to smear him. but jays father did come and tells nick of his early life. all the people pretty much move. so he moves to and breaks up with jordan and she tells him that she is actually engaged to another man. so he starts feeling pretty sinical towards people. so then he decides to move and so he wants to go back to the midwest but while he is in ny ny he sees tom and at first doesn't want to talk to him but then does and realizes that he and daisy only care about themselves and thinkt aht their money can just sheild them from bad things. then before he leaves he goes over to gatsbys house and just kind of mosys around looking at all of the emptiness. he really starts to realize that everyone pretty much just lives for themsevles and don't care about anyone else.
i think that Nick learns that no matter how good they seem to be they are not. Lots of people inthis world are very fake and do not care about anyone but themselves. These are the type of people that nock had been trying not to judge thoughout the entire book but he now finds himself doing just that.
I wonder what he does noiw?

i don't know why nick doesnt react to the situation mnore. he finds gatsby's dead body and doesn't even seem to care. i think that tom is going to be happy that gatsby is dead but he may feel bad.
i wonder if they are going to figure out that gatsby wasn't really driving and it was daisy?

GG Ch.7
In this chapter Nick Jordan and Daisy and Tom and gatsby all decide to go to the city to eat lunch. While they go Tom realizes that there is something going on between daisy and gatsby. he is not very happy about this so he starts looking for a ways to start confrontations with him. so finally he makes fun of him for calling everyone old sport. and then procedes to accuse him of lying about everything and that he is really running a bootlegging company. gatsby gets mad at this and says that daisy doesn't love him and does love him. but then tom says that he can'e undo the past and that him and daisy aren't separating. and at this point daisy is starting to like tom more. so then tom sends daisy and gatsby off by themselves to do whatever and shpow that he is not worried about gatsby abd as they are leavign the valley they see a fatal accindent and realize that myrtle was killed and tom thinks that is was gatsby but daisy was driving. and then gatsby is scared that tom is going to hurt daisy but they are actually very happy with each other and reconcile their differences.
i think that tom and daisy are happy with each other and this whole thing has helped them come together as spouses even more. i also think that gatsby is starting to realize that he is not going to get daisy and that his money isn't going to win her heart.
I wonder what gatsby wil do nexzt?

GG Ch.6
In this chapter the rumors about gatsby are going around a lot and everyone wants to know the real story about his past. There is even a newspaper writer that came to his house to ask him if he had anything to say about his life and he says no. So then nick says that he wants to tell the real story but it wasn't at this piont that he learned about it. he says that gatsby grew up on a farm and his name was actually james gatz and that he dropped out of college and that he got onto a boat cause he saved them from going into a storm. then he worked for the owner and fell in love with the rich lifestyle and when dan cody died he was supposed to get 25000 bucks but he didn't. so then he dedicated the rest of his life to getting rich. so then nick comes back into what is really happening. so he finds that tom is over at gatsbys having lunch and so he goes and it is very awkward and gatsby says that he knows daisy. so then jay has a party and and daisy comes and tom too and jay watches her the whole time and she does not have a good time. so gatsby isn't hap;py because she isn't happy and so he tells nick that he wants her to leave tom and come to her but then he nick figures out that gatsby just wants to please her with his money and that it will never work.
I think that jay doesn't really know what he is in for and that he is trying in all the wrong ways to get daisy back and also Nick is starting to feel very very uncomfortable because he knows that he is caught in the middle of this. i think that he can see the error in jays ways and that it will never be the same between them.

GG Ch.5
In this chapter Nick is getting back from a date with Jordan when Gatsby comes up to him and starts asking him if he would like a hole bunch of services from Jay. He says that he doesn't care until he realizes that he is just doing all these things for him because he wants Nick to arrange a meeting between him and daisy. so he agrees to do what jay wants but he doesn't want him to do all the things that he wanted to have done for him. so nick arranges this meeting for him and so Daisy comes over and Jay comes but then jay leaves and tells nick that it was a bad idea. But then he comes back and it stays kind of awkward for everyone but then he finally starts talking. and then he says that they should go to his house and they do and while they are there he takes daisy all around his house and shows her everything he owns of value. and she is like really happy and starts crying?
I think that jay is trying really hard to impress daisy because i think that he knows that she wants to have a lot of things and is very motivated by things. so he takes her throughout his whole house showing her every valuable thing. i think that nick feels that it is awkward that he is also involved with daisy seeing another man after he has already been with Tom when he was with his other woman. It is like Nick plays the middle man the whole time.
How will Nick change the situation that he is in being the middle man.

This chapter starts with Nick telling how he has kept a list of all the people that he has met at Gatsby's parties. So he goes through and tells about all the people and a little bit about them. He basically makes a list of all the rich and famous people in the Eggs. Then Jay takes him to lunch in the city and to meet one of his business partners. On the way up Jay says that he may of heard lots of stories about how he obtained his wealth but he will tell him the truth. he says that his family lived in the Midwest and they all died tragically and then he went to Europe and ended up in the war. So then they get the resturant and they all talk and Nick comes to find out that his partner actually rigged the world series. So right away nick is a little skepticle. Then he tells nick that the buttons on his cuffs are human molars so nick is very freaked out. Then meyer leaves and they see tom and they go up to talk to him and when nick turns around jay is gone. so then it jumps to nick talking to Jordan and she tells him how daisy and jay were in love before tom and daisy got married. And he tells him that is why Jay bought the house across the bay so he could be by daisy. Sh ealso tells him that gatsby wants to use him to get to daisy.
I think that nick is very taken back by all the thinks that he learns in this chapter. He doesn't know what to think about Jay and Daisy and Jay wanting to use him to get to daisy. Also he doesn't know what to think about Meyer and if he is in a bad business or not. but you can tell that he doesn't really judge him which is suprising.
I wonder if he will help out Gatsby or not?

GG CH.3
In this chapter he gets invited to one of gatsby's parties and he goes over there. He is very impressed with the amount of food and stuff that he has at his house. He is also impressed that he has a whole orchestra playing in his back yard. He also has lots of liquor for everyone to get drunk. While he is there he finds Jordan so they hang out most of the night. Then they want to try and find gatsby so they start looking for him in their house and they go into the library and find a very drunk man who is very impressed that all of gatsby's books are real. so they keep looking around and they eventually find him inadvertantly. s then they talk a little bit and he talks to jordan alone and she doesn't tell nick what they talk about. then they leave and they find that the drunk library guy has crashed his car. so then they part ways and nick talks about his work and how he does it a lot. then he says that durin g the summer he and jordan start hanging out more and more.
I think that he is a nice guy that doesn't want a lot of attention. He also likes Jordan and he doesn't care about her being dishonest. he says that he really does like her though and i think that she likes him too. I think that he is facinated with gatsby and that he thinks its cool that he has like every thing. He also enjoyed the party and realized how rich gatsby really is.
I wonder what gatsby talked to Jordan about?

GG CH.2
In the begginning of this chapter he starts by describing the valley of ashes and about the train. he explains doctor eckleburg ans how he watches over the valley of ashes. He then informs us that he is going with tom to meet his mistress. So they go to the car shop where she lives with his husband and Tom talks business with him and then when he leaves for a minute they tell each toher that she needs to get on the next train so they can meet and they arrange a meeting place. it also describes her and says that she is like a bigger woman that looks very poor. then they get to NY and they meet up after the train and Mrs. wilson gets a puppy for the apartament i think that she just likes to spend Toms money. Then they go to the apartament and they start drinking and invite the neighbors over and try and get a girl there for Nick. Then they all end up getting drunk and Myrtle starts talking about daisy and tom ends up breaking her nose he says that it is disrespectful. Nick ends up just leaving i think and going to the train station and waiting for a train to come to take him home.
I think that Nick is really not into the whole drinking thing because he says that he hasn't been drunk very much. I also think that he doesn't really like the idea of having a girl come up there basically for him. also he feels very uncomfortable about being with tom and his mistress because daisy is his cousin and he doesn't feel right about being with him. You can tell that he doesn't judge because he doesn't really say anything bad about the valley of ashes. if there is anything bad said it is said by tom.
I wonder if tom will meet back up with Jordan in the next chapter

GG Ch. 1
The first person that we meet in this book is Nick Carraway. He is a young man about 20 years old. He went to fight in the "Great War" which is WWI. He says that he really liked fighting over that and that his life seemed almost boring when he came back. When he gets back he decides to learn to be a bondsman. He was going to get a house with another guy but at the last second the other guy backed out. But he still got the house and he also got a dog. Then he was invited to his cousin Daisy's house because she didn't live far away. So he goes and realizes that Daisy's husband has another woman that he is seeing up in New York. He meets this Jordan Baker girl that i think he has a thing for because he kind of talks a lot about her. Then he goes home and is sitting outside of his house and sees who he thinks to be Mr. Gatsby for the first time.
i think that he is a very good person. One of the things he does is not judge people and i think that that is a very good quality to have. i also think that he likes the Jordan girl because he talks about her and says that he kind of likes her. I think that he doesn't know what to think about his cousin's situation with her husband.

F. Scott Fitzgerald
He and his wife were living in New York and He wanted tranquility so he moved to France. This is where he wrote the great gatsby. While they were in France his wife was cheating on him with a French naval officer. Also they became good friends with some expatriots people that had left the u.s. Then they moved back to the states then back to Europe and then his wife had a mental break down. he loved to live life to the fullest and have everything his wife was also like this.\
For Fitzgeralds quote i think that he meant that he wanted to write for the next generation and the next generation of critics because he wanted his books to influence the next group of people that live. And when he says to write it for the schoolmasters forever neans that no matter how old i gets the lessons are still the same and people can still relate
Historical events of the 1920's: Prohibition, Woman's Suffrage, Stock Market crash in 29, It was also the jazz age, Walt Disney produced their first sound cartoon.

Thesis
In the book “The Red Badge of Courage,” most of the main characters put on a figurative mask to try and be someone they are not or mask their true emotions.
The first character that I will illustrate this is with Henry. In the beginning of the book he says that he really wants to fight and that he is ready to fight. But inside he is very scared. He is scared that he will run when the battle comes. I also think that he puts on a mask for his mother because he doesn’t really want to go. Also he tries to become a leader so he can cover up him running. So basically he tries to cover up or mask is fear and guilt for running by trying to act very courageous. I also think that he has a fear of the unknown because he doesn’t know what is going to happen in the battle but he tries to make it look like he has got it all under control and is ready for whatever it throws at him but he is really not because he is constantly thinking about how he doesn’t know. “He had had the belief that real war was a series of death struggles with small time in between for sleep and meals; but since his regiment had come to the field the army had done little but sit still and try to keep warm.”(Crane1) I think that this quote shows that he fears what he doesn’t know and that he tries to make himself believe what he wants to.
The next person is Wilson. I think he is very scared also. He doesn’t want people to know this though. How he masks it is being very loud and obnoxious. I think that he also tries to get people to notice him like when he started the rumor that they were going to march and he almost got in a fight because of it. Also at the beginning of the story when him and Henry are just sitting there talking, Henry asks him if he thinks he will run when the battle comes and when he does this Wilson gets all mad and stands up and stomps away. So I think that that is his attempt at trying to mask his fear of the battle. I think that Wilson kind of breaks out of this mask because he turns very genuine towards the end of this book and really seems to act like himself and not try to just impress anyone. “He and the loud one came near to fighting over it.” (Crane1) This shows that he is trying to act all tough.
I think that another person that puts on a mask is the Captain. I think that inside he is not very confident. Also I think that he is also scared in battle especially the ones that he knows the odds are not in their favor. I think what he does is try and act very tough basically indestructible during the course of battle. Also when he sees a soldier running it is his duty to basically beat them so they will turn around and I think this makes him seem very tough. But also he is just really mean to the solders sometimes and I think this is an effort to hide his fear of the unknown which is he doesn’t know what is going to happen in the next battle. “The colonel came running along the back of the line. There were other officers following him. "We must charge'm!" they shouted. "We must charge'm!" they cried with resentful voices, as if anticipating a rebellion against this plan by the men.”(Crane23) I think that this shows how he was unsure of their actions.

Chapter 24
So basically in this chapter Henry's unit gets instructed to march back toward the river and while they are doing this henry reflects on his war experience. he thinks that he is happy with himself for his efforts in the last few battles. he is not happy however for his effort in the first battle. He has also changed a lot as a person he has grown up a lot and matured. also when he is going backthe sun peeks out and is very symbolic because he is becoming happy with himself. also he is more about the brigade and less about him.

Chapter 23
in this chapter they are still getting beaten pretty bad and the leader says that they have to charge so since henry is holding the flag he leads the charge and all the men follow. They rush the fence of rebels and have an intense fight and actually start pushing them back. then henry sees that the person holding the rebel flag is wounded so him and wilson go over and pry the flag fom his dying hands and feel a good sense of accomplishment since they have driven the opponent back and captured their flag. Wilson ends up with the flag and the rebs retreat and they are all very very happy about the win. I think that this is a huge boost to henry and his buddies. henry lays down in the grass content and starts to reflect. Is this going to be the last battle of the book?
Chapter 22
In this chapter henry is all ready for the next battle since he has been complimented so much on his loyalty and his good fighting skills. He carries the flad to the next battle and they start fighting as they fight henry starts to notice what is going on around him more and more until he basically stops fighting. He spends most of the battle in almost a trance and just watches everything happen. He looks around and sees that there are a lot of men being shot and there forces are weakening considerably. He notises though that the lutenint and wilson are not hurt yet. And he starts thinking about himself dying and resolves not to retreat no matter what happens. He thinks that if he dies the general will be upset since he is a good fighter and that that is revenge against him if he dies. i think that henry is getting to be pretty full of himself and think that he is relly doing the army a favor by being there. I wonder if his whole regiment is going to get wiped out?
Chapter 21
in this chapter the men are still felling very good for what they did but then the general comes over and starts just ripping them apart and says that they suck and that they were a hundred yards away from a good charge. hearing this all the men of the regiment get mad and hateful and say that they really hate the general and that they did do a great fight and that he jsut must not have seen them and that they all fought their hearts out and they did great. and the general just keeps going on about how bad they are and they all fell very bad. But then a soldier comes up to wilson and henry and says that the general did compliment them and said that they were the best fighters of the lot and basically the only good ones. This makes them feel very good and he also compliments him on picking the flag back up and leading all the men with it. I think that this boosts his self asteem a ton and that he really feels good about himself. I wonder if they will e in any more great battle?
Chapter 20
I thought that in the last chapter Henry had picked up the flag but apparently not becaue they like fight over it ib the beggining of this chapter ecause henry wants it and wilson has it. Henry ends up getting it and is very proud of this like i said before. That i think that he is very proud of himself for having the flag. Then he starts thinking about how this is an impossible task for them to beat them and he looks around and most of the men had scattered off into the woods to try and fight from there. Henry starts thinking about how he wants to do something great so badly so that he can prove the officer wrong that thinks they suck at fighting so this mounts lots of rage up in him. Then hthe rebs come down on them and start fighting and suprisingly the men make a good defensive opposition and hold them off and make them flee. when this happens henry feels very proud of his regiment. then after they do this they all feel very uplifted and confident. I think that this was a huge victory for them. I wonder if their moral will stay high or if it will get knocked down by someone?
Chapter 19
In this chapter they go and start running. They all run for all they are worth. a lot of the men are being picked off by the rebs that they are running through. it says that while they run they leave a small trail of bodies the whole way. they stop 2 times throughout their march and when they do they get yelled at and because of this Henry gets very angry with the commander. Then while they are running they follow the flag and Henry describes it as a red and white woman. and says that it sems like it can save lives itself. then all of the sudden the color guard gets shot and henry runs over and gets the flag and keeps on running with it. I think that this shows great dedication on his part and loyalty. you can tell i think that he feels great pride in being able to hold the flag and wants to do it well. I wonder of Henry will make it through alive?
Chapter 18
In this chapter they are all just standing around listening to the other battles taking a break. Then one soldier gets shot and falls to the ground and starts rolling around screaming. He says that he wants water so Wilson and Henry go to get it because there is supposed to be a stream near by. So they go but they don't find a stream but they do find a general and another soldier talking and he says that they basically need a suiceide unit and theychoose Henry and wilson's. They are very suprised by this so they hurry back to camp and tell the men that they are going to charge but not that they are all suoosed to die. I think that by not telling them they show agreat deal of will power. I wonder if they will prove them wrong or if they will all die?

Chapter 17
in this chapter when the rebs finally come henry loses all sense of feeling and just focuses on one thing and that is killing people. He starts firing his weapon that the barrel gets so hot he shouldnt even be able to touch it buthe still grabs it anyway and keeps loading and firing cartriges. then when the enemy flees and there is a break he doesnt even know it and just keeps on going until someone stops him. then they all say how great he was fighting and wilsoncomes over and asks him if he is feeling alright. then his officeer comes over and says that he wishes all his men fought like that and if they did he would have the whole rebel army whipped in a week. I think that this makes Henry feel very good about himself once he realizes what is going on. He doesnt even know that he could fight like that he just starts going crazy. He says that he thinks it is impossinle to win and that is what makes him fight so hard. I wonder what he will do when the next attack comes?
Chapter 16
They finally get to another battle but they are just kind of standing around waiting for the enemy to come upon them. While they are standing there the men were talking about how the generals suck that command them and that the reason they lose is because they jsut set them up for failure. then the commanding officer broke them up and said that they do more talking than they do fighting and that maybe that is why they got whooped. Then right as the chapter finishes up they start to see the rebs and hear gunshots. It says that the men seem to be very tired because they don't get enough sleep. I think that this will have a negative affect on their fighting skills. I wonder if Henry will run again once the fighting starts?

Chapter 15
In this chapter they are all lines up with weapons ready waiting to go to the fight and henry remembers the letter that wilson gave him. He yells at him but then decides not to tell him. he starts thinking and is almost happy that he has it because if he ever questions His whereabouts then he has somehting on him that he can use to deture the subject. He starts feeling superior to him because he had a very bad moment of weakness. Then after he thinks awhile wilson yells at him and tells him that he is very embarrassed and that he wants the letters back. this makes henry not feel so great about himself anymore. I wonder if anything else will knock him off his horse?
Chapter 14
In this chapter Henry wakes up the next day and he feels like he has been sleeping forever. When he wakes up he looks around at all the men around him and thinks that they are all dead. But then they wake up and all start getting up. Wilson comes to him and asks him how he is feeling and all that and he says that he still feels pretty bad. Then as they talk a little bit henry can tell that though the battle wilson has changed and its almost like he grew up and henry likes this about him. i think that henry kind of wishes that he would also grow up like this. then two guys almost get into a fight and wison goes out and brakes it up. then wilson tells henry that most of the scattered also and fought with other batallions. i wonder if he will say that that is what he did too.
Chapter 13
In this chapter he gets back to his camp and finds his regiment and all that. And he talks to his buddy wilson he feels deeply sorry that henry is wounded. He tells him that he got shot in the head which is a lie. So they take him and lay him down by the fire and get him all tended to and get him some coffee and all that good stuff. And Wilson gives him his blanket and all of his sleeping stuff and also bandages his wound. and i think that Henry feels kind of guilty about this because he wasn't really shot he was hit in the head with a gun. I think its funny because the corporal says it just looks like he got hit in the head with a blunt object which is what really happened. So then he ends up just falling asleep. I wonder how he will feel in the morning?
Chapter 12
In this chapter while Henry is staring at the battle all the men stat retreting and running right past Henry, he is trying to ask them what they are doing as they run by but none of them pay any attention to him. So finally he grabs a guy buy the shirt and asks him what is happening and the guy flips out. And ultimatly hits him in the head with his rifle. This knocks Henry down on the ground for a while and he has trouble walking afterwords. Then while he is stumbling along a man comes up and starts talking to him. he tells him that he doesn't look too good and that he will help him find his regiment. so they start walking and talking and the man starts talking about the battle today and how he saw a man die and it was tradgic and he was a good man and all that. Then they come to the camp and he says that he found Henry's regiment and points them out to him and then walks away. And as he is walking away he realizes that he never even saw the face of the man that just helped him so much. I think that henry is scared all the time about if people are going to find out or not about him. I wonder if he will go to his regiment right away or if he will just lay low for a little while longer?

Chapter 11
In this chapter Henry hears the battle get louder and he starts going towards it. He sees a bunc of infantry men going toward the battle that actually look like they are happy or excited to go. And as he sees this he like starts getting himself going and starts to take off toward the battle ground but then realizes he doesn't have rifle so he can't fight. He also doesn't want to go because he is thirsty and hungry. he goes close to the battle field to see if he can tell who is winning. He almost hopes that his side is losing so that he can justify his action of runnung. he feels bad about what he did still and tries to justify his sctions once agian. Will he meet back up with his comrads again? I wonder if they will make fun of him?
Chapter 10
In this chapter henry and the tattered man talk a lot. the tattered man says that he has never seen a man pass like he just saw jim do. he said that it was the funniest thing that he had ever seen. I don't think that it would be funny to seesomoen e die though. then the tattered man keeps asking henry questions and brings back up the subject of him and where he was hurt and every time henry had no reply. Finally the tattered man gets done with his rambling and askes him flat out where he was wounded and then henry gets pissed and walks away. then climbs a fence. and the tattered man is near death i think cause he starts saying things that don't make any sense. Where is Henry going to go now?
Chapter 9
In chapter 9 he is trying to get away from the tattered man so he is going ahead in the line and all of the sudden he sees a man that looks like he is already dead. a lot of soldiers are asking him if he wants help but he says no to all of them. Then something happens and he turns in the direction of henry and he realizes that it is jim cocklin. So then they talk a little bit and jim says that if a artillery regiment brings its carts down the road that he wants henry to get him out of the way. so he agrees and then the tattered man shows up and says that there is carts coming down the raod and jim starts running around. Something overtakes him that none of them can explain. They try and talk to him to get him out of the way but he will not move. then finally they do get him to move and he takes off toward a brush pile. at this point the tattered man and henry just watch him. He starts fighting for air and then eventually falls down and ultimatly dies. This upsets henry very much and he starts screaming. In either this chapter or the last one it talks about what the red badge of courage is and it is when someone is wounded during battle. And the red simbolizes the blood and the badge of courage is the wound itself.
Chapter 8
In chapter 8 he starts int the forest by himself then he hears more gunshots and he goes toward them. Then while he is going towards the battle he meets the line of wounded men. so he starts walking next to them and the person he is walking next to is the tattered man. he starts talking about how all the men fought so bravely and wonderfully. He says how everyone thought that they were going to run but they didn't they stayed and fought very bravely and i think that this makes Henry feel very very guilty. So they just talk a little bit and then the tattered man asked him where he was hit and he got very guilty and walked away from him.

Chapter 7
In this chapter he tries to rationalize why he did the right thing by running away and the other men were just idiots for staying there. he also started feeling very bad about himself for nto being apart of the victory. He felt that he had let his comrads down i think although he doesn't admit it. I also think that he is very mad at himself for what he dia d and this is why he starts running into the forrest. he starts just going throught the brush to try and find an alone spot . he walks into this clearing and finds a dead body that has been there for awhile. he locks eyes with the dead man and gets very scared you can tell it has been there for awhile because the eyes look funny and the mouth instead of being red is yellow. also there was a bunch of ants crawling on the body and this really freaked him out. Then after a short whie he just took off running again through the woods thinking about the ants being on him. How does Henry feel about death?
Chapter 6
Chapter 6 starts with them being all happy that the held off the enemy, They are all standing around congratulating each other. They are all very tired and say that they can not do any more fighting for a week. Then all of the sudden the men start yelling again that there are more rebels coming. This makes everyone feel terrible. Henry says that his arms and legs feel like there is no blood flowing to them. Then he is starting to get his gun ready and he looks over at the other guy next to him who is trying to load his gun and then he thows down his gun and takes off. So that makes henry start to think. He starts thinking that the enemy must all be made out of steel. and that they can go forever. He fires one shot from his gun then runs away. he says that he doesn't feel bad though cause there are a lot of other men that ran also. Then he comes to a general and the general is not very happy but then they learn that they are holding them back at the line that Henry ran away from. And he is very happy. I wonder if the general will say anything to Henry? Or what he wil do now?

Chapter 5
In chapter 5 there are a lot of things that happen. one is that henry gets to experience his first fight. this is a huge experience for him because he has no idea what to do. But when the enemy draws near his body basically goes into auto pilot. He can't remember if he loaded his gun or not but all of the sudden he just picks it up and starts shooting. And right before this happens he sees an officer beating the piss out of another soldier that was trying to run and i think that that makes him do what he did also. he got this feeling that he was apart of something bigger than himself when his body just took over. Instead of feeling like he was there for himself like he thought he was he felt like he was there for his regiment and the whole army. He felt a certain brotherhood with the people that he was fighting with. Then he felt the affects of a war atmosphere: Blistering sweat, a sensation that his eyeballs were about to crack like hot stones, and a burning roar in his ears. then he felt the red rage. he felt like he could not killl the other men fast enough. He wanted to go out and start strangling them with his bare hands. He was ovedrcome with the feeling of just wanting to kill. then towards the end they realize that they have held them off and start cheering. I wonder how he will reflect of this first battle that he was in? I think it will put a good feeling in him.
Chapter 4
In this chapter they get to where they are going to fight and once they get there they set up lines. All these rumors start flying around about who is getting beat and who is winning. They can kind of see men running around in front of them but they don't really know what is going on. Then they see the regiment in front of them running back and henry knows that he is going to have to fight. And he is still scared of what he is going to do or not. Then he starts seeing the men run back from the other regiment and they are all tattered and torn up. Once he saw the look on the other men's face he didn't even need to see the enemy he already was thinking about running. He was also straining to see the enemy. I wonder what he will do when he does see the enemy?

Chapter 3
in the third chapter the regiment basically takes off at a sprint to the battle grounds but they don't really know where they are going. they get to a place they keep trying to think what is going to happen and Henry starts basically freaking out. he says how he thinks that the commanders are getting them into an ambush and that they are all gonna get slaughtered like pigs and he wants to just yell at everyone and tell them that they are in trouble and gonna die. But he holds his toungue. He also sees a dead man. he thinks about this dead man in regards to himself and how he is young just like him and wonders how the afterlife is. he tries to see the afterlife in his eyes that are gazed toward the sky. he also wonders if the price of being brave and possibly dying is worth the fight. it also talks about how all the men had different fighting styles and that some wanted to just stand there and fight but some wanted to hide. when he gets to the battlefield he expects to see this big grand battle but instead he just sees a bunch of small scirmashaes. he is somewhat disapointed by this. i wonder if he will fight or flight?
Quiz #1
1.What advice does Henry's mother give him? That while he is at war not to become someone he is not and to avoid bad people. Like the people that drink and smoke she said stay away from them. She said that she wanted him to stay true to himself.
2. What question is Henry struggling with? I think the biggest thing that he is struggling with is that he doesn't know what he is going to do when he comes to the battle. He is struggling with the thoughts of himself running just like the squirrel did when it git scared. and the whole time until they get to the scene of the first battle he is trying to think of what to expect. If it is gonna be a big field filled with courageous men or a bunch of scared boys.
3. What does the "dead soldier" represent? I think that the dead soldier tells them the cosequences of war. also it said something about how the soldier looked very poor and how he may have enlisted to make himself look better than he really is. he was trying to mask his poorness with his bravery.
4. What is the "red rage?" the red rage when people like freak out when they kill someone and they just go on a huge killing spree. also i think that you can kind of see it when it says that Henry slid down the bank of the ravene then sprinted up the other side because he wanted to see the battle that lay on the other side.

Chapter 2
Abstract:In this chapter they do move and march. they call Henry the youth. Henry talks about that he doesn't know if he really wanted to be a soldier or not. He says that sometimes he feels like he wants to still be at the farm with his mother but sometimes when he is thinking about great battles he still wants to be a soldier. The tall soldier comesover and sits by him and they have a little chat and the tall guy ends up getting mad and walking away because henry is asking him about running away.
Response:I think that Henry really is scared of fighting because he always has it in the back of his mind that he will run when the real fighting starts. I also think that he regrets desicion to join the army. He doesn't know if what he is feeling is natural that is why he askes the other guy to see how he feels.
Question: I wonder what he will act like when they do come to their first fight assuming they do.

Chapter 1
In the first chapter we are in an army camp. i think that the setting is during the civil war because they are blue and brass and are called Yanks. The camp that they are in has not seen any fighting yet but they are all itching to fight. There are always rumors being spread about when they are going to move into battle. the main character i think is Henry. He left his mothers farm to enlist. she was not very happy about this but she didn't really say too much about how she felt. the reason he joined was to be envolved in epic battles but there have been none yet and he is not very happy about this. there was also two soldiers that got into a little scuffle because one heard a rumor they were going to move and the other didn't believe it.
